| Background Description / Mission Statement: |
The China Business Council for Sustainable Development (CBCSD) was officially established in October 2003, by the efforts of the China Enterprise Confederation (CEC), the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), and the long-term involvement of well-known Chinese and international companies. CBCSD is a coalition of leading Chinese and foreign enterprises, which are registered and operating in China, and is a national organization established through the Ministry of Civil Affairs of the People’s Republic of China.
The purpose of CBCSD is to provide a platform for exchange and cooperation among Chinese and foreign enterprises, government, and social communities with the objective of sharing information, experiences, and best practices in the field of sustainable development. Through its efforts the organization aims to support the course of sustainable development in the world through shared effort by helping companies improve understanding and performance in environment health safety (EHS), corporate social responsibility (CSR), climate change, and other related areas. |
CSR activities include:
Due to increased member interest in examining issues involving the entire value chain of an industry, CBCSD helps companies better understand the future challenges they will be facing, creates more stable platforms for long-term investments, and strengthens management of their business license. Efforts harness independent research and stakeholder consultations to see how a particular industry can better align its practices and policies with the requirements of sustainability. The following projects aim at enhancing the legitimacy of the respective sector's actions to promote sustainable development and guarantee the neutrality and validity of the findings.

- In November 2008, CBCSD, WBCSD, and CSI co-hosted the “Cement Sustainable Initiative Seminar- Future Technologies and Innovations in Cement Industry in China” with the main topics of cutting greenhouse gas emissions and China's cement industry examination of greenhouse gas.
- In October 2008, Wang Jiming, president of CBCSD attended the High-level Roundtable on the New Trends of Sustainable Development and made a concluding speech.
- On April 10, 2008, CBCSD held the membership conference as well as the report on New Trends of Sustainable Development in Beijing. 150 people attended the meeting, including senior leaders and liaison representatives from its member organizations and representatives from the government departments, business and sustainable development-related institutions.
- On November 14, 2007, CBCSD, WBCSD, and the Michelin company held the "China's Sustainable Transport workshop" in Shanghai. WBCSD published a global sustainable transport project "Traffic 2030" report, including the case studies in China, and Brazil, India and Tanzania.
- In April 2007, CBCSD launched its "1 + 3" project. Under this initiative member companies are expected to train three of their parters based on their own experiences with CSR. Issues addressed include environmental protection, labor issues, and human rights protection. At the launch of the project a total of 36 companies had already agreed to join the first phase of the program under the guidance of 11 enterprises including BASF and several Chinese multinationals including Sinopec.
- On October 16, 2006, CBCSD and ACCA co-hosted the "Sustainability Reporting Guidelines" workshop in Beijing attended by more than 100 members of CBCSD businesses, mainly large state-owned enterprises, multinational companies, and partners in corporate senior management, as well as academic research groups and related organizations. |
